It had a long curved bill that fit perfectly into the flowers of many native plant species, helping to pollinate the forest while it fed on nectar. The mamo's feathers were highly coveted, used to make feather cloaks called 'ahu ʻula worn by Hawaiian nobility. The mamo became extinct due to habitat loss, introduced predators, and mosquitoes.
